Bayfield, WI | Winter Getaway

Oh, Bayfield – Such a gem. I like to describe this little town as Cape Cod meets the Northwoods. You can find this city of 473 at the very most Northern tip of Wisconsin positioned along the shores of Lake Superior.

I made my way to Bayfield this past weekend to meet up with a couple of amazing creatives (do yourself a favor and go check out Lace and Brass Events and Chelsea Dobs) and set aside a winter day getaway full of wandering and exploring.

Summer in Bayfield is a time when this area really shines and shows it’s true colors. Bayfield boasts more apple orchards and wineries than you can count, the ability to boat and sail to your heart’s content, and kayak your way through the Apostle Island’s sea caves (definitely on my list of things to do). When you’ve finished exploring the mainland, grab yourself a ferry ticket. Do some hiking around the island then enjoy a cold drink (or two) and Bob Marley vibes at Tom’s Burned Down Cafe because YOU DESERVE IT and it’s amazing. All in all – summer in Bayfield is quite the experience . . .

But winter has a way of allowing you to see places in a different light. Bayfield is no different. The hustle and bustle of the busy season fades away, Lake Superior is still, and most tourists are replaced by locals. Here’s how to enjoy the slower season in this vibrant little town:

  • Start your day by grabbing yourself a cup of hot coffee or latte from Kickapoo Coffee. You’ll find the friendliest baristas, a beautiful light-filled space, and alllll the baked goods. *Confession* – I may or may not have ordered 3 drinks here throughout the day. I’m telling you this place is GOOD.
  • Next – make your way through the downtown streets and check out the local shops. You’ll find local artisans, like Silverwaves Jewelry, clothing shops, bookstores, etc. There’s something for everyone.
  • Wander down Rittenhouse Ave. and you’ll make your way to the snow-covered and frozen shores of Lake Superior. Make sure to take that in before walking along.
  • Time to eat? Head over to Maggie’s. You’ll find flamingo-inspired decor, tropical drinks, and hearty menu to fill you back up and put you in a happy place! Other recommendations: The Fat Radish and Manypenny Bistro.
  • If you’re feeling adventurous – rent a pair of snowshoes or skis from the Howl Adventure Center and check out the Brownstone Trails or Houghton Falls.
  • Depending on the season and conditions, you can also explore the Apostle Island ice caves or drive the ice road (yes ICE ROAD) across Lake Superior to check out all Madeline Island has to offer in the winter months. Unfortunately- neither were open to the public when I was visiting, but maybe you’ll be a bit luckier!
  • Slow down and enjoy every minute.

To be honest – I went into my day in Bayfield without an agenda. We filled it full with hot coffee, street-wandering, good laughs, and even better company. A winter day in Bayfield checked those boxes PERFECTLY. I hope you find your way there and can find yourself saying the same.
